The First Steps Toward Independence
Welcome to the “I want to do it myself” period
Welcome to the “I want to do it myself” period. Your little one is now a toddler – walking, talking, disagreeing, laughing, and asserting itself. This is the age of strong personality – and an even stronger need for guidance.
Motor Development and Language
Children at this stage run, climb, dance, jump. They learn to express themselves with words, form sentences, and develop imagination through role play. Their vocabulary grows rapidly, as do their endless questions!
Emotional Development and Boundaries
They develop self-awareness, start saying “no,” push back, but also show intense feelings of affection. Your role now is to set clear and consistent boundaries with love – not punishment but guidance.
What You Can Do:
- Create a routine that provides security.
- Reinforce positive behavior with praise and encouragement.
- Join in their play and let them take initiative.
This period is exciting, dynamic, and yes—sometimes exhausting! But it’s also magical.
