International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women: A Continuous Commitment to Justice, Safety, and Equality
International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
Every year, on 25 November, the global community marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women — a day dedicated to raising awareness, promoting prevention, and strengthening actions that aim to eradicate one of the most persistent social issues worldwide.
This day was established by the United Nations in 1999, in honor of the Mirabal Sisters, three women who became symbols of resistance in the Dominican Republic. Their assassination in 1960, due to their activism against an oppressive regime, stands as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for freedom, equality, and human rights.
The 25th of November highlights the need for coordinated efforts to address gender-based violence through:
- awareness and education,
- strong support structures,
- active involvement from governments, communities, and the private sector,
- and the cultivation of a culture of respect and equality at every level of society.
Creating safe, supportive environments where women can live, work, and thrive without fear is a shared responsibility.
